Day 3 - Commenting Challenge

 

Today's Jenna's Commenting Challenge is all about Pintrest!  Let me be perfectly honest here: 
I like Pintrest.
I use it as a resource when I need ideas.
But I don't LOVE it like a lot of people do. 

Please don't hate me!

I think Pintrest is a fabulous place to get creative ideas, especially for holiday crafts, DIY stuff, parties and recipes, but I get one maybe once every few weeks and that's about it.  But I do love to get new recipes and treat ideas from it, and here are just a few of the items that I've made.

Like I said, I love that it has a lot of holiday ideas.  I made these items last Halloween for Emmalee.  She even got to help!

Day 2 - Commenting Challenge

Well today's topic for Jenna's Commenting Challenge is:  What's your favorite TV show/series/reality show? If you don't watch TV, what about a favorite movie or book series? 

Having a 2 year old certainly limits some of the TV watching that goes on in my house.  I mean if we get serious, I probably watch Disney Jr. just as much as I watch ABC or CBS.  But, I do have a few favorite shows that are on my DVR so I can watch in my "down-time".  Here's a quick run down:

• Amazing Race
• Duck Dynasty
• Next Food Network Star
• Chopped
• Deadliest Catch
• Pretty Little Liars

Can y'all tell that I enjoy cooking shows?  I used to be a huge One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl and Vampire Diaries fanatic, but OTH and GG are off the air, and VD just doesn't interest me anymore.   

I'm also a huge reader.  I love to read.  Before I had Emmalee you could rest assured that my nightly routine involved a nice hot bath, glass of wine, and a good book.  Those were the days.  Since motherhood encroached upon me, reading has become a favorite pastime, but I still try to sneak in a chapter or two when I can.  

Some of my favorite books/authors are:

• John Grisham - I grew up wanting to be a lawyer, and even worked at a law firm for a little while, so I love legal/crime novels.  I'm just a sucker for them. 
• Mary Higgins Clark - I haven't read anything from her in a while, but she is still a favorite. 
• Karen Kingbury - I love her novels!  
• East of Eden - John Steinbeck - in my opinion, this might be one of the greatest classic novels of all time. 
• The Twilight Saga - Yes, I'ill admit that I loved the Twilight Saga books, and the movies.  And if you enjoyed them, then read The Host.  Stephanie Meyer did a great job on writing that one too.

Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

My bookclub just finished reading the "Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Anne Schaffer and Anne Barrows.

This was a good book with an easy-flowing writing style and fun characters that you soon come to love. This is a novel written through a series of letters between Juliet Ashton, successful London journalist, her friend and publisher Sydney, Sydney's sister and Juliet's lifelong friend Sophie, and a group of strangers who have a group called the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. These letters tell a tale of life on the island of Guernsey during the German invasion during the war. Juliet eventually travels to Guernsey and what she finds there will change her life forever.

I would certainly recommend this book if you are looking for an easy-to-read leisurely book. Since it is written through letters, it is very easy to pick up the book for just a few minutes, but then come quickly to a stopping point if you need to. Personally, I didn't really want to put it down!

For the month of March we are reading "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. I'm only 3 chapters in and I'm already loving it. I can't wait until April when it comes out on the big screen. Want to read with us - please feel free to!

Book Review - The Shack

A few weeks ago I read "The Shack' by William P. Young with my book club. Before I read the boo, I had heard a lot of different things - some people liked it, other didn't. Personally, I thought it was a great book.

The basic story line goes something like this:
Mack takes his three children on a camping trip, but his youngest daughter is kidnapped, and believed to have been murdered in a desolate shack. The killer is never found. Years later, Mack received a mysterious note to go to the shack - possibly to meet God. Over a life-changing weekend, Mack learns who God really is and learns to finally let go of the guilt he felt of his daughter's death.

There are a few controversial things about this book. Many people have felt that God being portrayed by a large african american woman is one of them. I have to admit that when I first read about this in the book, I was taken aback as well, but as "God" explains his revelation to Mack, I realized one thing - we cannot put God in a box. Just as the book states, we often think of God as this old, white robed and white bearded man - maybe something like Gandolph in Lord of the Rings - but the fact is that He is nothing like that at all! He is EVERYTHING! He is a nurturing mother to those who need love; he is an adoring father to those who need his compassion; he is a shepherd to those who need his guidance - he is our everything!

Although there are a few things I didn't care for about this book, it certainly had me thinking. I would definitely recommend this to a believer who is strongly rooted in their faith. However, because of some of the questionable "religious" material, I would not recommend this book to a non-believer or a person who is struggling with their faith.

The Help

I just finished reading "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. This was the very first book in my new book club and it was a wonderful choice. I truly enjoyed the book and it provided great discussion.

Last night was actually our very first book club meeting (besides our meet n' greet several weeks ago) and it was so great. To honor the southern heritage of our book, we sure did have some fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, biscuits and DELICIOUS caramel cupcakes! It was fabulous.

I'll be honest, it took me several chapters to actually get into the book, but once you get going, you won't want to put it down. If found myself relating to several of the characters; love some and hating others. It sheds new light on the civil rights movement and will effect your thinking on the way life was "back then".

I hope that you will pick up this book and enjoy it as much as I did.

Await Your Reply

Today I finished my latest book, Await Your Reply, by Dan Chaon.

This book was definitely different, and not a personal favorite. The story follows three different people: a man named Miles trying to search for his long-lost twin brother, Ryan a guy who decides to reinvent himself when he realizes he was adopted, and Lucy a girl who runs off with her high school teacher to a deserted motel.

For me, this book was extremely difficult to follow. First of all, there are three completely separate story lines, and within each storyline, the author goes from past to present, from past to present. I was constantly having to go back and remind myself about which character I was reading.

Although the author does do a good job of entangling the three stories, I felt that his writing style just made reading the book more of a challenge than an enjoyment. I was originally going to stop reading after a few chapters, but I was too intrigued to find out how the whole thing came together...so I kept reading.

If you are a person who enjoys a good web of chaos or reading a challenging book, than this is a book for you. However, if you are like me and just like reading for sheer enjoyment, than this book probably shouldn't be on the top of your reading list.

But tonight, I am looking forward to picking up my next book...although, I'm not quite sure what book it will be! I need to go exploring in the "library".

The Appeal

POLITICS, POLITICS, POLITICS! On Saturday, I finally finished reading "The Appeal" by John Grisham, and it was all about (you might have guess it...)POLITICS!

Now I hold a BS in Political Science, and I work in a law firm, so this book was certainly my cup of tea!

The basic premise of the book is about how politics and people of power can so deeply affect our judicial system. Although the book did now end how I wanted it to, it ended in realistic way. In my opinion, John Grisham didn't write this book to make you smile and laugh, he wrote this book to make the American citizen realize that there is a need for judicial and political reform.

John Grisham definitely did a fine job of writing a fictional story about the factual world of politics. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who either 1) love politics, or 2) wants to know more about the world of politics! I have read quite a few Grisham novels, and this one was definitely different than all the rest. If you're a Grisham fan, pick it up and give it a read.

The next book I've decided to read is "Await Your Reply".

Wanna Read with Me?

So after finishing The Host on Tuesday, I spent some time in my library, my office...standing in front of my bookshelf trying to figure out what book to read next. So, I glanced at my summer reading list and my next book popped off the page..

Maybe it's because I work at a law office, or maybe its because I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science, but it seems like this book is reeling me in!

So, if you're in a reading mood, then join me in reading The Appeal. If you have ever read John Grisham, then you know that you won't be disappointed.

The Host

Well I finished The Host by Stephenie Meyer last night and I was SAD! This book was so good that I didn't want it to end!

I will say that after reading the inside cover and reading the first couple of chapters, I wasn't even sure that I wanted to read the book - its sci-fi...and I don't really read sci-fi. But this is certainly sci-fi for those who hate sci-fi!

The first few chapters are background info...its the stuff you need to make everything else make sense. But one you get into the story and love triangle (actually a love square), then it is really fabulous.

If you are anything like me and love a good love story - this book is for you! Great plot, great writing, great reading, great emotion and great ending! However, the author does leave the ending a little open so that she can come back and write a sequel if she wants to ...and I certainly hope she does!!!

My Life is Twilight

So ya'll know I love Twilight - the movies, the books - everything! Now no - I don't consider myself a Twi-hard because I'm not that fanatical...but I still do love Twilight.

However, anticipating the release of Eclipse, I am doing the chapter countdown with Twilight Series Theories. (If you have never been to this website - it is awesome. I actually went to DBU with one of the sisters that helped create it!) Since Eclipse has 27 chapters, they started at the beginning of the month and are reading a chapter a day.

Well today in my morning read of MLIA (see my post about it here), I saw that there is actually a site called MLIT - My Life is Twilight. So of course I sauntered over to read through a few. Some of them are just stupid, in my ever so twilighted-opinion, but some are HYSTERICAL!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Today my boyfriend touched my face, and for the fisrt time i didn't flinch at how cold his hands were. He looked at me and said............"your pretending i'm Edward aren't you?" I blushed as we both knew it was true. I can officially say MLIT!!!!

Today, I was half naked and getting dressed when my Edward cutout (which I bought on one of my frequent trips to Forks) fell on top of me. Instead of pushing it off, I exclaimed, "Oh Edward! Not this early!" Then my mother walked in and took him out of my room saying, "its for my own good." MLIT

Today I overheard two guys talking in Science, one of them asked, "How old are you?", the guy then responded, "Seventeen." I quickly turned around and asked, "How long have you been seventeen?" The two guys stared at me in utter confusion. My best friend backed me up by responding, "A while." MLIT.

Today, my mom and I were driving home when we passed a doctors office. The sign said "Dr. Cullen MD. But Dont Worry, I Don't Bite." LMAO. MLIT. :)

Today, this guy was asking me for relationship advice. Friends and I were telling him what to do, and he just couldn't understand. Finally I said, "YOU ARE HER JACOB" and he gave me this horrified look and I knew he understood, Twilight is now my inspiration for relationship advice. MLIT

Today, my boyfriend told me he loved me and I smiled but didn't reply. He waited a few seconds before saying "Say it." I just smiled. Then he said "Outloud." I smiled a bit more and whispered "Vampire.". I'm not going to lie, it caused an argument. MLIT.



And just to clarify...no, I have not called my husband Edward and I have not asked him to bit me...no; whether or not I have dreamed of it is another story!!! HAHAHA

Bitter is the New Black

So I just finished reading Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, egomaniacal, self-centered smart-ass, or why you should never carry a Prada bag to the unemployment office, by Jen Lancaster! This book can simply be described in one word: HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know that I have ever laughed out loud so many times from a book!!!

Summer Reading

Well I'm not sure if I can finish all of these books this summer, but here is the start to my summer reading list. Yes, you will notice some classics, some legal and of course, some Stephanie Meyer! But this is also not the entire list...I still have about 5 or 6 more books that are being added!

But, without further delay, here is the Summer Reading list of 2010...thus far!

Reading

So I just finished reading the entire Twilight Series, by Stephanie Meyer (including the partial draft of Midnight Sun...the story from Edward's perspective). It was wonderful! I enjoyed both movies when they came out, but now have an incredible appreciation for the books as well. I can honestly say that I LOVED reading the whole series!

Now I am a reader...I love everything about reading, especially when there is a whole series! With summer coming around the corner quickly, I need a new reading lineup for my time in the sun! So, I am coming to you, my dear readers, for your advise on some great books...preferably fiction...but regarding pretty much any subject matter...romance, comedy, mystery, drama...just about anything! So let me have it...what are your favs?????

125 Years of Good Housekeeping

So while I was browsing on Amazon a few weeks ago, I came across the $5 magazine subscriptions and got a year long subscription for Good Housekeeping and Southern Living. Well my first GH came in the mail yesterday and I was so excited.

This year is the 125th birthday of GH and I loved reading the editor's letter in this addition. I love that when Clark W. Bryan published the first edition of GH, his mission was to have a family journal to "produce and perpetuate perfection as it may be obtained in the household." And today, the mission has changed a bit...now, GH strives to perpetuate a happy life, not a perfect one! I love that simply because it doesn't have to be perfect, to be wonderful.

In each addition, GH is taking a piece from the past 125 years, and reprinting it. I laugh because some things do seem to be a bit outdated, but some, are just a true today as they were back then. In 1885, GH printed a "Chapter of Household Don'ts"....it goes like this:

Don't stand when you can sit just as well.
Don't put off the mending from week to week.
Don't you know that vinegar will clean the isinglass in the stove doors?
Don't you know your floor oil clothes can be washed in buttermilk or kerosene?
Don't give little children two languages to learn, first baby-talk, then afterward true pronunciation.
Don't hesitate to place a piece of zinc on the live coals in the stove; it will clean out the stove pipe.
Don't throw away nice woolen stockings when the feet are worn out, but cut them down for the children.
Don't fail to clean and tidy in every nook and corner but Don't be a slave to a shining stove or carpet!
Don't do unnecessary work because your grandmother did. There was not half so much to be done in her day.

I hope that in this upcoming year, your life will be wonderful, not perfect; and that you don't become a slave to your shining stove and carpet!

Great Reading

I'm just full of articles today! I guess you can say that I have been reading a lot of helpful information lately...ranging from budgeting to dieting, exercise and everything in between.

A few moments ago, I read this article on Yahoo that talks about food that can help flatten your tummy! It has some great tips on what food and snacks actually help you burn away the fat! Good news for me is that I like all the food listed!!!!

then, after discussing our kitchen staples several weeks ago, I found this article talking about kitchen staples for trying to feed your family on a budget. Several of the items were several listed on blog comments and such, but I thought I would still share.
